The District of Bantul is part of the greater Yogyakarta Special Area Province (DIY province). With Bantul as its capital city, it is located 10 km south of Yogyakarta. Bantul is also called Gelplak city because of the hundreds of home producing geplak (a tradional sweet famous from this area). With an area of 506,85 km2, Bantul has a population of 740,000 people. Bordering with Yogyakarta and Sleman district in the North, the Indian ocean to the South, Gunung Kidul district in the East, and Kulonprogo district in the West. Average temperature is 20°-30°C all year round and situated between 110°1840110°3440 East and 14°0450 14°37.40 South.
Subdistrict Bantul is devided into 3 major area: west, central and east consisting of 17 subdistrict, 75 village and 935 hamlet. Main occupation is rice farming, craftsmen, factory labourer, civil servants and merchants.
Main agriculture products are rice, sugarcane, and staple crops. Shalots are grown in the southern parts. Handicrafts such as leather, pottery, wood sculpture, and batik are common in Bantul and exported to foreign market.
