Klaten is situated on 110°30-110°45 East and 7°30-7°45 South with an area of 6.555,56 Km2. Most of Klaten are agriculture lowland, suitable for growing rice. Klaten is considered the breadbasket of Central Java. The highland produce lime stone as mount Merapi gives away volcanic sand and boulder essential for constructions. Klaten is the gateway for two main cultural/tourism destinations: Yogyakarta and Solo.
Klaten district was formed in 28 October 1950, with a population of 1,277.297 people living in 28 subdistrict, 391 village.
To the east, Klaten borders with Sukoharjo, to the south with Gunung Kidul, and to the north with Boyolali.
Situated between mount Merapi in the north and Seribu mountain range to the south, average elevation is 75-160 meter above sea level. Northern Klaten lies on the slope of mount Merapi, the central are lowland and southern region are mostly hills.
9,72% of Klaten lies between 0-100 meter above sea level, 77,52% are within 100-500 meter above sea level, 12,76% are within 500-1000 meter above sea level.
Klaten has tropical climate with average temperature of 28°-30° Celcius. Average rainfall is 153mm/month, January with the most rainfall (350mm) and July with the least rainfall.
Klaten has a mixture of ecotourism, culture tourism, history tourism, traditional rituals, supported by adequate infrastructure. This makes Klaten potential destination for local and international visitors. In addition to its close proximity to two main city Yogyakarta and Solo.
Tourism plays an important role in Klaten. With a variety of destination for everyone and situated within Joglosemar (Jogjakarta-Solo-Semarang)region, tourism development is priority for Klaten government.
